What is the Kannada alphabet?
The Kannada alphabet (ಕನ್ನಡ ಲಿಪಿ) is an abugida — a writing system where each character represents a consonant with an inherent vowel sound. It has 15 vowels and 34 consonants, giving a total of 49 core letters.
Kannada is one of the oldest languages in India and is the official language of Karnataka. It has its own unique script which children typically begin learning from preschool and LKG onwards.
Vowels (ಸ್ವರ) — 15 letters
Vowels are standalone sounds. Children usually learn these first as they form the foundation of all Kannada words.

Consonants are grouped by how they are pronounced. Each group shares a similar position of the tongue or lips. Children typically learn these after mastering vowels.
Tips for teaching Kannada letters
- Start with vowels — they are simpler and fewer in number
- Teach one letter per day rather than rushing through the alphabet
- Trace before writing — tracing worksheets build muscle memory
- Connect each letter to a familiar word (e.g. ಅ for ಅಮ್ಮ — mother)
- Practise for 10–15 minutes daily rather than long sessions once a week
